  16. <p>     Most Disappointing Peek Through a Looking Glass. If you get
  17. the wrong prescription at the local vision center, you can just
  18. go back and have it changed. Not so for NASA, whose incorrect
  19. prescription is spinning around the earth in the Hubble Space
  20. Telescope. Because a mirror was ground to the wrong shape, the
  21. space agency was saddled with a $1.5 billion instrument that
  22. performs far below expectations.

  24. <p>     Bravest New Surgery. Medical science, which can do
  25. remarkable things to repair the human body, took a giant step
  26. by daring to tinker with the original blueprint. In the first
  27. authorized use of gene therapy, a four-year-old girl with a rare
  28. and deadly enzyme deficiency received genetically engineered
  29. cells that could control her illness. So far, she is doing well,
  30. and scientists hope eventually to treat other illnesses the same
  31. way.

  33. <p>     Faultiest Forecast. Schools closed, people fled and disaster
  34. kits sold out as Dec. 3 approached in New Madrid, Mo., all
  35. because climate consultant Iben Browning had predicted a major
  36. earthquake. The fateful day passed with no earth-shaking news,
  37. but there were casualties nonetheless: Browning's already
  38. dubious reputation and the credibility of media outlets that
  39. treated his forecast seriously.

  41. <p>     Worst Thing to Try at Home. When two doctors working at
  42. Atlanta Hospital came up with a radical AIDS treatment--heating up the patient's blood--they let CNN know about it
  43. after just one trial. The gullible network broadcast live
  44. reports of the second attempt at treatment, giving free and
  45. favorable publicity to a farfetched, unproven medical procedure.

  47. <p>     Best Reason to Avoid Drinking with the Boys. Research showed
  48. what experience has long revealed: women can't hold liquor as
  49. well as men. Women have far smaller amounts of a stomach enzyme
  50. that breaks down alcohol before it enters the blood. Thus they
  51. get blitzed faster.

  53. <p>     Cleanest Machine. For the first time, a major manufacturer
  54. said it would be able to mass-produce a nonpolluting car. GM's
  55. electric Impact would be twice as expensive to operate as a
  56. regular chariot, but ever improving batteries should eventually
  57. change that. Besides, isn't clean air worth something?

  59. <p>     Smallest Advertisement. Using a powerful microscope, IBM
  60. researchers lined up individual xenon atoms to spell out the
  61. company's initials. That clever display of know-how got
  62. magnified pictures of the minuscule logo into newspapers all
  63. over the world--for free.

  65. <p>     Best Reason to Overhaul the Stereo System--Again. The
  66. long-awaited digital audio tape recorder has finally arrived in
  67. U.S. stores. Will DAT--which makes crisp, noise-free tapes--replace CDs? Will erasable CDs do the same to DAT? Whatever
  68. happens, audio stores will always tell people their stereos are
  69. just not good enough.

  71. <p>     Best Imitation of the Fountain of Youth. You say you're
  72. getting old and run down? Well, step right up and try some
  73. human-growth hormone. Normally it's used to treat dwarfism, but
  74. tests have shown that in elderly men it can reduce fat, restore
  75. muscle tone and make the body look 20 years younger. And all for
  76. $14,000 a year, plus the possibility of a few serious side
  77. effects.
  78. </p>
  79. <p>     Best Cosmic Comeback. After appearing to be dead in space,
  80. Magellan got cranked up again and sent back the most spectacular
  81. pictures ever taken of Venus. They reveal Earth's nearest
  82. neighbor to be a caldron of recent volcanic activity--not a
  83. promising spot for vacation homes.
